NECROPSY :
ABORTED BOVINE FOETUS
Remember :
1. Brucellosis is a zoonosis! Prevent contamination.
2. Placental cotyledons are helpful for examination and
should be included for evaluation.
The following test packages are offered by VetPath :
1. BASIC TESTS ON AN ABORTED FOETUS

Necropsy
-
Histopathology – lung, liver, spleen,
brain, skeletal muscle, myocardium, kidney, thyroid, adrenal gland, thymus and
placenta (cotelydon)

Cytology :
-
Blood smear – Diff Quick stain
-
Tissue smear – cotelydon, lung or
abomasum mucosa (in order of preference)
-
Giminez stain – for Chlamydia/Coxiella
-
Stamps stain – for Brucella
-
Diff Quick stain – for Protozoa
2. COMPREHENSIVE TESTS ON AN ABORTED FOETUS
-
All above mentioned BASIC tests, and
-
Bacterial culture – fresh foetal organs
and abomasum for cultures, including selective media for Brucella spp.
isolation.

Immunohistochemistry – bovine viral
diarrhoea (BVD) antigen detection

Histochemistry (on formalin fixed
material)

Sheep – Toxoplasma and Wesselsbron

PCR test for Chlamydia (on fresh
organs)

Pre-colostrum foetal fluid (CSF,
thoracic fluid) or serum from late abortion for detection of antibodies
against certain abortigenic infections – please specify agents to test for.
NOTE :
-
Infectious agents are only confirmed in
about 30-40% of cases of abortion.

If smears (minimum 4) are submitted they
must be air dried, well packed and
sealed to prevent formalin fume contamination.
