NECROPSY : ABORTED BOVINE FOETUS

Remember :

    1.   Brucellosis is a zoonosis! Prevent contamination.

    2.   Placental cotyledons are helpful for examination and should be included for evaluation.

The following test packages are offered by VetPath :

1.   BASIC TESTS ON AN ABORTED FOETUS

  1. Necropsy

  2. Histopathology – lung, liver, spleen, brain, skeletal muscle, myocardium, kidney, thyroid, adrenal gland, thymus and placenta (cotelydon)

  3. Cytology :

    1. Blood smear – Diff Quick stain

    2. Tissue smear – cotelydon, lung or abomasum mucosa (in order of preference)

      1. Giminez stain – for Chlamydia/Coxiella

      2. Stamps stain – for Brucella

      3. Diff Quick stain – for Protozoa

2.   COMPREHENSIVE TESTS ON AN ABORTED FOETUS

  1. All above mentioned BASIC tests, and

  2. Bacterial culture – fresh foetal organs and abomasum for cultures, including selective media for Brucella spp. isolation.

  3. Immunohistochemistry – bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) antigen detection

3.      ADDITIONAL TESTS AVAILABLE

Must be specifically requested additional to the comprehensive test.

  1. Histochemistry (on formalin fixed material)

    1. Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis

    2. Neospora spores

    3. Rift valley fever

    4. Sheep – Toxoplasma and Wesselsbron disease are also available

  2. PCR test for Chlamydia (on fresh organs)

  3. Pre-colostrum foetal fluid (CSF, thoracic fluid) or serum from late abortion for detection of antibodies against certain abortigenic infections – please specify agents to test for.

NOTE :

  1. Infectious agents are only confirmed in about 30-40% of cases of abortion.

  2. If smears (minimum 4) are submitted they must be air dried, well packed and sealed to prevent formalin fume contamination.

  3. Please specify the specific test package and additional tests required on the submission form.

  4. Fees for packages and individual tests are supplied on our fee list (2003).
